It was Werner Heizenberg who formulated a theoretical physics principle according to which the universe reveals itself in the gaze of our expectations and is affected by our observation of it. There are many ramifications to this and I am grossly over-simplifying here but the point of it is that the way we look at the world has the ability to affect how we perceive our world. |

As I am writing this, this Friday, I am conscious of the fact that on the build-up to Valentine’s Day I am writing about emotions and sentiments which are difficult to handle and sometimes hard to control. Lee McQueen’s death in London, where he took his own life, raises questions however which are pertinent to all of us and, I hope, Valentine’s Day also.

At school my favourite book was J. D, Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’. Holden Caulfield’s voice seemed to me, back then, to puncture the pomposity and artificial sense of superiority affected by adults and act like a trumpet call for keeping it real. J. D. Salinger passed away this year and it’s apt that we look at his most memorable creation. |

Today it’s Friday and as I am writing this I am conscious of the fact that officially I am a year older. It is, of course, a biological year and as such it has many different meanings, depending on how I choose to look at it. |

As last year ended and this one began I made the usual resolutions most people make. I wanted to be fitter, work less if I could and spend more time with the people I love. I also old myself that I would spend more time doing things I want to rather than things I have to do. Great, right? Except that all of this is a little self-centered and none of it is really world-shaking. No problem, of course, as new year resolutions are not designed to change the world and are, by definition, self-centered.
