It comes round once a year

Today it’s Friday and as I am writing this I am conscious of the fact that officially I am a year older. It is, of course, a biological year and as such it has many different meanings, depending on how I choose to look at it.

I can decide that it’s another step top the point where my looks and youth will no longer be there. I can decide that it’s another step towards a journey which will end with my no longer being here. Both of these are inevitable. Time, in the end, is against us and try as we might we can only slow it down. The view I take, as you might expect, is a little different. A year past is a year forward in a journey which, so far, has been full of excitement, adventure and self-discovery. It has had its lows as well as its highs and it will have many more so ahead and I focus on where it is taking me and what I am learning.

This also means that, hopefully, I am also growing emotionally and psychologically as well as biologically. The latter without the former is truly a depressing thought, the former without the latter would be a miracle I would love to see but maybe is never destined to happen for anyone.

Heavy thoughts for a birthday day so let me finish by saying that I truly appreciate everyone of you who went into the trouble and took the time to write and wish me happy birthday. If I could hug you all individually I would. Thank you also for being here and sharing some of your time and thoughts with me. Those of you who have been buying my books I want to say a special thanks to because your feedback and suggestions have been incredibly useful. As a writer I always work with an ‘ideal reader’ in mind but I know that there is no such a person. We all have different experiences, different needs and different expectations. Your feedback has been vital in helping me understand who reads my books.

Well, it’s Friday and I have a birthday party to catch and seeing how it’s weekend I am going to make it last three days. Wherever you are this weekend and whatever you are doing, thank you for support and friendship. Have a great time and, always, be safe.
